This is a fantastic opportunity for a creative and innovative Product Designer who is seeking an opportunity to become part of a team who produce a range of consumer items for the leisure and sports sector. The role will provide the opportunity to work on new products whilst improving and develop the range of existing items by utilising your understanding of technology, materials and manufacturing methods. The successful candidate will be working within a design studio with a team of UK Designers and will be liaising with the manufacturing team in China. The position will involve creating a design proposal and managing projects from initial conception all the way through to manufacture.
Duties will include:
- Designing
- Modelling
- Producing prototypes
- Testing
- Co-ordinating the development program.
Responsibilities
As our product designer, you would be working on variety of projects simultaneously:
- Creating ideas as part of the development team or developing design concepts using CAD (computer-aided design) to establish the design brief, including the concept, performance and production criteria
- Involvement in specialist or multidisciplinary team meetings
- Sketching initial design ideas
- Using a 3D printer to test ideas
- Identifying the suitability and availability of materials
- Producing detailed, final hand drawings and specifications, using dedicated computer software (CAD) to produce design specifications, including parts lists and costings
- Testing the design concept by computerised modelling or physical hands-on testing of models
- Researching materials, processes or market requirements
- Arranging meetings and liaising with engineers and other departments, including marketing and commercial, to discuss and negotiate appropriate production processes, costs and commercial issues
- Occasional travel to our offices in China and Japan to assist in the development process as required.
- Making presentations to senior management, to present design proposals.
Qualifications
- A Product Design Engineering or Industrial Design Engineering first degree with three years’ post-graduate experience in product design.
- An impressive portfolio of innovative and creative work.
Skills and abilities
- A high degree of technical knowledge balanced with creative ability and a hands-on approach
- Visual and spatial awareness
- Commercial awareness
- Proficiency in CAD
- Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator
- Familiarity with the capabilities and limitations of CNC machining & injection moulding
- Knowledge of industrial processes, techniques and standards
- The ability to cope with the pressure of deadlines
- A willingness to build and maintain positive working relationships and to share information with others
- Determination to achieve the end result, and optimism and enthusiasm when things don't go to plan.
